A wrap up from the national feis 2016
What a weekend we had for the 2016 National Feis. The weather was glorious and although we didn't get the attendance we expected for our Saturday night rugby and music event we understand it was a long day for everyone and we hope you will attend our next events. Our thanks to Bryan Mulligan of the Hutt Valley Irish Society for acting our official photographer for the weekend.
A summary of the various events below for those that missed attending.
Irish Dancing: Amazing entertainment and highly competitive across all sections. Both big prizes the 'Tuition scholarship' and 'Ulster Cup' were both won by the dancers from the O'Neill school of Irish Dance in Christchurch.
Speech, Singing and Instrumental: fantastic talent performed here throughout the various categories and congratulations to the Hutt Valley Irish Society for winning the centre with the most overall points.
Netball: Competitive and fun, we had 4 underage teams and 2 open teams. Hutt Valley came out on top in a very competitive and sporting game in the open section.
GAA: commentary from president of Wellington/Hutt Valley GAA Eoghan O'Leary
I just want to do a quick round up of the GAA at the Feis this year.
In what were 4 hotly contested competitions it was great to see participants from Wellington, Christchurch, New Plymouth, Hamilton and Auckland. Wellington/Hutt Valley competed in all 4 finals losing 3 by very small margins. Christchurch McKennas proved that they are still very strong by winning the Men's and Ladies football and the Camogie but Wellington would not be outdone and fought to take out hurling.
We also played our Kiwi game on Sunday which ended in an 7-6 to 8-3 draw, proving to draw one of the biggest crowds of the weekend and it was great to see the Kiwi players playing our native game so well.
We also had our masters game on Sunday, which also ended in a draw. 23 players took part in another great game.
I would like to thank all the players for the hard work they put in leading up to the Feis, the coaches and trainers who had the players so well prepared and our referees, without whom we wouldn't have games at all.
I would also like to thank the Irish Society committee for all their help and I want to say a massive thanks to my own committee, nothing would have happened without you.
Thanks too to all the spectators for coming out to watch the games.
Check out our Facebook page for some great photos from both days of a great weekend of sport.

Darts: commentary from Richard Waggott
A great afternoon of darts was had on the Saturday, in total 18 competitors stepped up to the ochie for an afternoon of precision marksmanship and displays of peak athleticism. The format was 501 pairs with a flying start and double finish and the teams contested an afternoon of round robin league play to separate the darting men from the darting boys. The top four pairs after two round robins went on to contest the semi-finals and then the grand final which was the best of five legs.
Teams entered from across Wellington including from Upper Hutt, Lower Hutt, Island Bay, the Lovelocks Bar teams and representatives from Porirua. Along the way there were some spot prizes for side games such as Bullseye Musical Chairs (don’t ask) and other fun events. Well done to Arran “the bandit” Milne for taking home the spot prize dartboard.
There was some fantastic competitive darts throughout the day with a number of 100+ check outs and some big scoring and memorable clashes of the tungsten titans. Both of the semi finals and the grand final were nail bitingly taken to the deciding leg but ultimately the spoils of the day went to Porirua with Doug Olds and Jay Monos (The Porirua Ponies) very deservedly taking home the silverware.
Golf: commentary from Pat Scullin
A great day was enjoyed by all who took part in the Golf at Shandon Golf Club, many thanks to the Shandon Club and in particular Ross Bond, and Roger Paterson for making this possible, we also want to thank the Pro Shop for their assistance and cooperation very much appreciated. We have to report that the unanimous opinion of the course was it was superb so also thanks to the green keeper and staff.
While thanking people I would like to thank very much Brian Gahan the Hutt Irish Society president for his enthusiastic assistance which contributed immensely to the day. Brian has also raised the point with us that we should in fact play golf between the two clubs more often and we will have some talks around this and come back to you.
The winners on the day were ......Best net Richard Carroll with a net 66 very well done Richard 2nd Tony O'Riordan 3rd Paul Murray.
Stableford winner Keith Van Niekirk [Hutt Club] Keith also won the longest drive with a huge straight shot that almost reached the green and had a very tidy round 2nd James Scullin 3rd Lewis Howell Lewis also won the nearest the pin after a careful measure had to be taken to decide it we also warmly congratulate Lewis and his wife on the arrival of their baby daughter [ Lewis is the bar manager at the Backbencher]
The Durkin Cup then was won by the Wellington team of Richard Carroll [captain] Tony O'Riordan, Paul Murray and James Scullin, well done lads, we need to arrange to present the cup to Richard at an appropriate time.
We also had a lucky card game at the 19th which was won by Darren M'Clure [Hutt} and Alistair Boyce [Backbencher proprietor] at this point we want to also thank Boycie very much for the donation of two $50.00 meal vouchers for the golf and a Dart Board for the darts.
Finaly I want to thank everyone who took part for making my job so easy a great bunch of guys and not a single grizzle just great......Pat Scullin
Indoor Bowls: commentary from Terry Moffet
3 teams entered this competition, one from the Hutt Valley and 2 from Wellington Irish. The Wellington team of Maryann Harrington, Ursula Carroll, Maureen Braakhuis and Sean from the Hutt Valley easily won
the final game against the other Wellington team after both teams had had a win.
Other high lights of the year. Jess Moffat Frank McKenna, Carl Jaimeson and Terry Moffat were 3rd equal at the National Catholic Fours championship. Jess was in a fours team that reached the quarter finals of
the National Fours while Terry played in a team that was runner up in the National Masters Fours.
Jess also played for the North Island against the South Island team.
We had two new players at club nights this year but lost other players due to personal reasons.
In our annual match against the Upper Hutt Cossie Club we managed a comfortable victory to bring the trophy back to Irish. We hosted the evening and provided our typical hospitality.
We hope to start the new year again late in March, everyone is welcome to join us.
Thank you to all our Trophy sponsors, we really appreciated your sponsorship.
We are now selling some Irish favourites behind the bar at the club, call in any Friday or Sunday evening to get your fix.
